I received this article from the Independent today from an American friend who used to live in Madrid, her comment was "is this possible?"

• stench (very bad smell)
• loopholes (ambiguities in a law that make it possible to avoid it)
• drafted (made a preliminary outline)
• cracks down (enforce a law more stringently)
• ailing (troubled, sick)
• the straw that broke the camel's back (A small and seemingly insignificant addition to a burden that renders it too much to bear)
• beam (long think piece of wood)
