One of the strangest and most surprising stories of Tuesday's primary is that of Alvin Greene who won the South Carolina Democratic nomination for the US Senate. The only money he spent was the $10,400 required to register as a candidate and nothing else. Democratic party officials were caught off guard--this is generally considered an un-winnable race against Republican incumbent Jim DeMint and a candidate with experience had been selected to try his best. The story gets worse since it's been revealed that he faces felony charges...a great example of how political parties have less control over their candidates in the US system of government than in parliamentary systems.
- unemployed (doesn't have a job)
- defeated (win against)
- out of my pocket (cash spent that won't be reimbursed)
- felony (serious crime)
- withdraw (retire)
- allegation (formal accusation)

Extra credit: Greene has given one interview to The Root. And Carly Fiorina started her US Senate campaign in California with a big gaffe.
